The Earl of Southampton Trust recently received a grant application to provide a refurbished iPhone to support a child living with Type 1 diabetes, enabling vital connectivity with a Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) system which offers real-time tracking and improved condition management.

Woman in a blue shirt checks her phone's glucose monitoring app. A sensor is on her arm. She's indoors on a sofa with soft lighting.

What Is a CGM System?

A Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) system is a sensor worn on the body, designed to help people with diabetes manage their glucose levels. The system requires a smartphone so that an app can receive glucose data wirelessly from the sensor.

The app displays the glucose readings, trend arrows (showing the direction and speed of glucose change), and provides alerts for high or low glucose levels.

The system is designed to eliminate the need for frequent finger pricks for glucose testing; although finger pricks are still recommended if alerts don't match symptoms or expectations.

It provides continuous glucose readings, allowing for better management of glucose levels throughout the day, users can set their own glucose thresholds for high and low alerts, and customise alert sounds.  The system also allows users to share their glucose data with up to 10 followers via an app.

Enhancing Lives Through Technology

We are thrilled that we have been able to help a child monitor their glucose levels, manage their condition, and potentially improve their overall health. The Earl of Southampton Trust are incredibly proud to support families in this way, and are committed to helping where we can. If you are in need of support, and live within the Ancient Parish of Titchfield (see map on our homepage), we encourage you to apply for a grant with us.
